West Java fertilizer maker PT Pupuk Kujang, a unit of state fertilizer holding company PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) has initiated Indonesia’s first hybrid green ammonia production trial, aiming to replace coal in power generation and support the country’s energy transition.
Pupuk Kujang’s Director of Operations and Production, Robert Sarjaka, emphasized that the company is pioneering the production of green ammonia in Indonesia.
“This marks a historic milestone in the energy sector,” Robert stated during the inaugural production event at Pupuk Kujang’s Ammonia 1B plant on Tuesday.
Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen without fossil fuels, is considered the cleanest form of ammonia, emitting no direct carbon emissions when burned. Pupuk Kujang has partnered with PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) to source green hydrogen for its production.
During the initial trial phase, one ton of green hydrogen will be processed into five tons of green ammonia. The ammonia will then be used at the Labuan 3x300 MW coal-fired power plant in Banten for co-firing—a process where ammonia is burned alongside coal in a boiler to generate steam for turbines.
Vice President of Technology Development at PLN IP, Hedwig Lunga Sampe Pajung, added that the green ammonia will be used for an eight-hour co-firing test.
“If the results are safe and satisfactory, we will proceed with efficiency calculations,” Hedwig stated.
Japanese energy company IHI Corporation will provide technical evaluations for the trial, focusing on burner modifications required to integrate ammonia combustion into the existing system.
